North Manchester, IN – In his final year at Wabash High School, Zach Whiteman is a busy young man not alone with school, but also with his personal and work life.
Work life? – yes!
Through the resources of the Wabash-Miami Area Program for Exceptional Children, Zach has been in a work training program for slightly over 18 months. During this period, he has found himself with dish cleaning services at the Wabash Pizza Hut Restaurant, food preparation at the Wabash County Club, and with the Peabody Retirement Community’s (North Manchester) laundry services.
With a “can do” attitude, a constantly smiling face, and inquisitive sense, Zach weekly works with Mert Weinley (Peabody resident volunteer), Elaine Hutton, and Cindy Betten at Peabody.
Weinley commented, “I like working with Zach, he seems like a very nice young man.”
According to Peabody Senior Director, Chris Scheer, “Peabody began a cooperative relationship with the Wabash-Miami Program approximately five months ago.” He added, “This is a rewarding experience for both Zach and Peabody. Resources permitting, we hope Peabody can serve other special needs students with enriching training programs.”
Chris Dawes of the Wabash-Miami Program added, “We appreciate the opportunity Peabody has given Zach to work on his employability skills.”
Zach, is the son of Becky and Greg Whiteman. He has two brothers and one sister.
His parents expressed that this has been a good experience for both Zach and Peabody. “Zach is a good kid with a good heart and we are proud of his work at Peabody.”
Zach stated he wasn't certain what he wanted to do after graduating from high school, but he stated he truly likes working with people.
Established in 1931, Peabody is fully licensed and accredited. The campus is comprised of a 48 bed Memory Enhancement Center, 144 long term care beds, 124 assisted living residences, and 57 independent living residences.
